We believe cross-training with other gyms benefits the entire BJJ community. Visitors from other academies are welcome at our community open mat sessions. There is no drop-in fee for those sessions.

For days and times, see the schedule page. Look for community open mat on the calendar.

Before You Visit

Check-in: Use the check-in kiosk when you arrive. If you have not already signed a waiver online, the kiosk will prompt you to complete one before you step on the mats.

What to wear: Open mat may be gi or no-gi, depending on the session. Check the schedule and come prepared for whichever format is listed.

Hygiene: Arrive with clean training gear, trimmed nails, and good personal hygiene. Do not train if you are sick, have open cuts, or have any skin condition that could be contagious. See Hygiene in BJJ for our full standards.

Experience Requirements

Visitors should have at least six months of BJJ experience before attending open mat. This helps ensure everyone understands the difference between a competitive roll and rolling recklessly at full intensity.

If you have less experience but would like to attend, request permission in advance from a coach. Do not assume you can drop in without approval.

Training Standards

Open mat is for productive training, not for proving a point. Rolls can be competitive, but they must stay controlled, respectful, and safe.

All participants must:

  • Respect the tap immediately
  • Communicate with training partners
  • Avoid unsafe or uncontrolled movements

Coaches or staff may ask anyone to sit out or leave if their training puts others at risk.

Submission Control

Apply submissions in a controlled manner. Give your partner time to recognize the submission and tap. Do not crank, rip, or force submissions suddenly.

Advanced Leg Locks

Advanced leg locks must be discussed and agreed on before the roll begins. This includes heel hooks, toe holds, kneebars, and other submissions that can cause injury quickly if applied carelessly.

If leg locks have not been clearly agreed on before the round starts, do not use them.

Guests

Experienced members may bring brand-new or untrained guests, but those guests should only train with the member who brought them unless a coach gives permission otherwise.

Our Expectation

We want open mat to stay welcoming: train hard, learn, and leave better than you arrived. Follow the rules above, check the schedule, check in at the kiosk, and treat the room with the same respect we ask of our own members.
